India has been one of Apple's most significant and strategic bright spots in recent history, according to Ram, head, Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR For Apple. “Apple's decision to prioritise iPhone 13 series availability in India, on par with that in the United States and other markets, helps it to build on its recent market initiatives to ramp-up iPhone assembly in India, as well as its aggressive marketing initiatives, including the online retail store,” Ram says.
According to Ram, Apple's recent growth in India has been fueled by its older-generation iPhone devices. According to CyberMedia Research (CMR) data, the iPhone 11 was Apple's best-selling model in Q2 2021, accounting for more than 60% of all iPhones shipped. “We expect iPhone 12 will power Apple's growth momentum going forward,” Ram says.
Apple has been working hard to make India its top priority market. Pricing has also been a big influence in the last few years. For example, because of a global chip scarcity that has impacted smartphone companies, it was widely predicted that iPhones could cost more this year. Apple hasn't adjusted the cost of the iPhone 13 from the iPhone 12. This is especially true now that the base storage option has been increased from 64GB to 128GB. That's a compelling incentive to raise the price, but Apple appears to have taken the high road and stayed true to the price points.
CMR's Ram feels optimistic about Apple's chances in India. “Apple is now primed for its best-ever performance in India,” he adds, adding that “the older-generation iPhone 12 series combined with the early availability of the new iPhone 13 series will favour Apple.”
